UNITARIANISM & THIS UNITARIAN CHURCH

Very many people are Unitarians without knowing it, for the Unitarians are a band of people united by just one thought: that answers to the really 'big' questions of life are best sought by interacting with other people in a fellowship and bouncing one's own ideas off others. Most religions believe that they have the Answers; Unitarian religion recognizes the right of every individual to search for his or her own answers, but believes that this is best done within a fellowship of people all of whom are also searching for their own answers.

Unitarianism, then, is a religion without a creed: it requires nobody to sign up to a statement of belief, but asks of all that they, each in their own individual way, seek earnestly for answers to the 'big' questions. By the same token, then, Unitarianism is profoundly tolerant of other religions, and anybody who attends a Unitarian worship service will frequently hear mention of religious insights other than those found in Christianity.

Unitarian religion has its origins in the fact that, several centuries ago, people started questioning the assumption that the idea of God-as-Trinity was to be found in the Judaeo-Christian Scriptures. And they found that the idea of the Trinity was not contained in the Bible. What this implied was that Jesus of Nazareth could no longer be regarded as 'the Second Person of God' and, over time, Jesus came to be regarded as a great teacher, but one who was fully human. Thus it is that anyone attending a Unitarian service will not hear Jesus addressed as a god, nor will they hear prayers addressed to God 'through our Lord Jesus Christ'.

This Church, then, exists as a meeting-place for those who wish to explore their understanding of life and the world. But it is more than that. For it is striving to be a centre around which revolves a community founded upon love. Yes, we are trying to discover the deeper meaning of our lives, but we are doing that in the clear recognition that deeper understanding brings up the capacity for greater harmony with one's fellows.
